The Dalai Lama visited Staten Island — and blessed and consecrated the altar inside this extraordinary hilltop museum.
Step into the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art and wander among treasures and sacred objects celebrating Tibetan history, art, culture and Buddhism. When the Dalai Lama visited in 1991, he said it felt like being in Tibet.
What makes its story even more fascinating? Founder Jacques Marchais never actually visited Tibet — yet she became so captivated by its art and culture that she created this incredible sanctuary and amassed more than 1,000 objects. It became the first museum in the world devoted solely to Tibetan art.
Italian master stonemason Joseph Primiano helped bring her vision to life. Together, they spent Sundays driving around Staten Island searching for local stones to build this sanctuary — the first Himalayan-style architecture built in the United States.
Today, escape into its peaceful gardens, take a meditation class, experience a Tibetan sound bath, practice Tai Chi, or discover one of its many workshops — and experience a little piece of Tibet without ever leaving Staten Island.
