Before card readers became common, paying by credit card meant using a machine called a knuckle buster. Popular in the 1970s and 1980s, it used pressure to copy the raised numbers and name from a credit card onto a paper receipt. The cashier placed the card and a multi layer sales slip inside the machine, then slid a heavy bar across it. The customer signed the receipt, and the merchant later processed the payment. Unlike today’s instant card payments, these transactions relied on physical paperwork and manual processing.
