Two years ago, Helene dropped a tree straight across our deck.

We had already torn down the original rotting deck and built a new one that we loved and used constantly, and then in an instant we were starting over again.

The storm took the deck and screened porch, but it also took so many of the trees that made our backyard feel private and shaded. So when we rebuilt, we added the pergola and planted vines with the hope that we’d get some of that feeling back.

Two years later, and the vines are climbing, the string lights are glowing, and this has somehow become an even cozier version of the space we lost.
