DEADLIFT CHEAT SHEET 💪

Three of the most commonly performed deadlift variations:

CONVENTIONAL DEADLIFT
The best of the three for building overall strength.

It uses more knee bend and involves a large amount of muscle mass across the entire body, making it an excellent whole-body strength exercise.

It can absolutely build muscle, but the hypertrophy stimulus is spread across multiple muscle groups rather than being targeted toward one specific area.

And that’s why you don’t commonly see conventional deadlifts used as a primary hypertrophy exercise by top-level bodybuilders.

Bodybuilders generally want to be more specific with exactly which muscles they’re trying to develop. Rather than using one exercise that spreads the stimulus across the entire body, they’ll often choose exercises that allow them to place more tension on the specific muscles they’re trying to grow.

For strength: typically 1-6 reps.

ROMANIAN DEADLIFT
One of the most commonly used deadlift variations for hypertrophy.

With less knee bend, we can place greater emphasis on the hamstrings and glutes. We start from the top, control the eccentric and maintain tension throughout the entire set.

It’s also an excellent strength builder with plenty of carryover for strength athletes.

For hypertrophy: typically 8-12 reps.

STIFF-LEGGED DEADLIFT
The body position can look almost identical to an RDL.

The major difference is how the exercise is performed.

Rather than starting from the top and maintaining constant tension, every rep begins from a dead stop on the ground, with much less emphasis on the eccentric.

This makes it a great posterior-chain strength and hypertrophy exercise, with particularly good application for strength athletes wanting to develop starting strength from the floor.

Typically 3-6 reps, depending on the goal.

All three are fantastic exercises and all three can have a place in a well-designed training program.

The difference is what you’re trying to get out of them.

Overall strength. Targeted hypertrophy. Or strength from a dead stop 💪

Electrobar 🍸

For years, I’ve dreamed of opening an electro bar: an intimate space with immaculate interiors and impeccable sound, creating a dedicated home for the genre.

Recently, I came across a stunning new space that ticked every box and realised I didn’t have to build the place I’d been imagining. It already exists.

Soon, Electrobar will come to life as a regular event at this amazing new venue. More info very soon.
