“Families are forever” can offer comfort. It can also crowd out grief—and the time we have with each other now.

My latest Recovering from Religion essay explores Mormonism, Día de Muertos, and remembering our dead without having to earn a reunion. Read it through the link in my bio.

I left the church almost 3 years ago now. But I’ve celebrated Día de los Muertos most every year since serving my mission in Mexico City just about a decade ago. I can’t say I regret serving because my time there reconnected me to my roots, my ancestors and parts of myself I didn’t know I was disconnected from. Since leaving, Día de los Muertos has become infinitely more dear to my heart, and I think you’ve captured those feelings into words beautifully in this post. Thank you

Most Mormon funerals are triggering they don't have proper room for grief. Lucky my aunt's was all about her. My step dad however the stupid bishop was talking about the plan of salvation and yes we are all sad but it's ok because he's in heaven now and blah blah blah. Seeing him in his temple clothes was also triggering. He didn't ever look like that. It felt like I was staring at a shitty replica of him like it wasn't real. I remember him in his flannels and cowboy hat not that wierd temple hat. At least I was allowed to leave something in his coffin something that showed who he was other then Mormon. A man proud of his Irish heritage. I left a handmade coaster with his name in Oghem and a Celtic knot. For day of the dead I made him Irish soda bread

I didn’t realize people were still referring to the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as Mormons still and as a Latina I found it odd to read ‘día de muertos’ it made it confusing so I kept reading your slides trying to make out what this was about. Then I realized. I’ve never attended a funeral service where a bishop or someone from church stepped in to speak solely about the gospel rather than the individual. That’s super odd and out of line. All services I’ve attended were solely focused on the individual and there were pictures, their fave things, and so much more that made it truly seem as a life was being celebrated. I don’t know if this is an Utah culture thing but I had to come on here and comment that the gospel was never meant to be conditional bc our Heavenly Father is not about that life. It pains me to know people were brought up or shown these teachings bc this just isn’t it. I celebrate día de los muertos every year and I love how my Christian faith/teachings align with my culture.

Growing up, I do remember day of the dead to be somewhat taboo, even in the spanish branch. Tomorrow will be the 1st time I participate en dia de los muertos 🖤

Thank you for your words… they really made an impact for me… I made an Ofrenda to honor, celebrate and to remember loved ones and all my furbabies who gave me such unconditional love this year. It was magical!♥️🐾🐾♥️

I agree with all of this! I think the worst thing about the spiritual bypassing of grief is that the weight of the unresolved grief can be enough to keep someone from questioning the church. It can keep someone blind to all of the corruption, the lies, etc because facing them and questioning your beliefs means having to face a lifetime of grief that's been shoved down but hasn't actually gone anywhere. Grief is a sacred part of the human experience. We grow through it, and it's a crime against humanity to take that sacred experience away. I grew up Mormon, and the people closest to me know that I will come back to haunt each one of them if Mormonism is so much as mentioned at my funeral 😆

I've been to the funerals of my father and grandparents, and every one felt like a hostile takeover by someone with a responsibility, and no knowledge of the departed. They have all left a bad taste in my mouth when I needed to celebrate and thank and mourn that person. Every one of those needs were left unmet. I have left instructions that if my funeral is taken over by the church, that someone is to read a statement by me denouncing that and the church in the sharpest of language. It is meant as a deterrent and a warning. It is one of the reasons I can't stand it.

WOW. You’ve so clearly described some of the deep, debilitating grief living in my body that I’ve been trying to find the words for YEARS in this post. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
