Gables at Aarhus University, Denmark. The architects, Kay Fiske and C. F. Møller, came up with one form for all purposes. Sometimes long and low, occasionally short and tall, as in the library stacks (10). The extreme simplicity, even the abstraction of the design is such that the rare sight of students through windows always comes as a surprise.

The details too are the same throughout. They have remained unchanged in the many building phases from 1935 to the present day, a tribute to the staggering competence of the architects. The same windows, vents, gutters, ridges, blinds, balconies, stairs…

An architecture for the end of time.

Kay Fiske is so elegant, so precise. One of the most underrated authors of the 20th century.
