Children in Manawarin, along with their teachers, have for years been forced to endure punishing conditions just to reach to school. The canal that should allow boats to the landing remains heavily silted, leaving students to wade through deep mud and slush while carrying their school shoes in their hands. This is not a temporary inconvenience. It is a daily barrier affecting indigenous communities. Ministers have visited, posed for photographs, and delivered empty promises. Nothing has changed.
The Opposition Leader is therefore demanding that the relevant authorities deploy an excavator immediately to desilt the canal so boats can once again reach the landing. WIN is calling on the Minister of Amerindian Affairs and the Minister of Education to intervene and ensure this long-standing failure is fixed. Indigenous children should not have to struggle through mud for the basic right to an education.
