I’m also really curious to know if anyone in NSW does a hybrid approach to schooling? 🤔

As in, a few days of homeschooling and the other days attending a mainstream school. I’ve heard of families doing this in Victoria, but I’d love to know if it’s possible here in NSW and what it actually looks like in practice.

I think part of the appeal for me is having a bit more flexibility and selfishly (I guess), more time with my kids. One thing I’ve really valued about travelling around Australia is all the extra time we’ve had together as a family and it’s made me question what I want life to look like when we settle back into life back in our house .

I love the idea of giving the girls more time to explore their interests and learn at their own pace, without necessarily having to give up the social side and structure that mainstream school can offer.

Does anyone actually do this in NSW? Is there a way to make it workor are there particular schools that support this kind of arrangement?

Would love to hear from anyone who has experience with it or knows of families making it work! 🤍

I homeschooled the whole way though best thing ever we tried 50% school kids are bullies ..... Then we tried 5 mornings a week gave that idea up. Homeschool unschooling works best :) loads of printout school work sheets etc to use

As a teacher of 25 years, I can see why this might appeal but I think it’s one or the other. I feel it would be really unsettling for the child and create inconsistencies in their education. There would be confusion and constant conversations of you missed at as you were away those days sorry… you missed that task you missed that assessment you missed that learning it would be hard on the child. ❤️

I know the concept sounds good but unfortunately in reality, it may not always work. Lessons are ususally taught in a sequence and build on their knowledge as the days go by. From my experience, it can make the child feel really confused when they miss days and return in the middle of the sequence. Often when children feel this way with broken attendance, they will typically experience school avoidance and disengage.

It's not a cool idea, it's rotten for the kids

No. You can’t in NSW. You could go part time distance education but you need a diagnosis. Anyone talking about your “right” to do whatever is wrong.

It's not possible to do in NSW. Some schools who offer distance education offer on site lessons to those who want it but homeschooling families aren't allowed.. yet

Im an education consultant in NSW with over 20 years experience and I haven’t really heard of this happening. There’s certain exemptions but it’s rare.

My kids go to Australian Christian College in NSW. There is an option to do distance education. So from home some times and in classroom some days. It is definitely done in NSW

Can you homeschool full time and find a nice little community of homeschoolers in your area that come together regularly? Keeps the socialisation aspect you are wanting and also keeps the flexibility. I have heard about some great communities on the GC that operate like this, just not sure about NSW. Would need to do some searching c

The comments are not it for me. For a child experiencing school can’t and anxiety, it just makes sense. It’s not for parents to remove their child who can already attend full time schooling.

I actually think this is silly. Key content would be missed and your poor child left behind and confused. Not only academically but socially.

Our local Steiner school does a 4 day week. The kids have Wednesday off to break up the week and pursue other interests.
