My first born weaned right before his 5th birthday, I’m still nursing my 3 1/2 year old, 2 year old, and 9 month old. Breastfeeding is so much more than nourishment for children. It may be an unpopular opinion but if you sexualize women who breastfeed and get the “ick” if you see a mother nursing her toddler… you are the pervert, not the other way around 🫢

Research suggests that extended breastfeeding continues to offer meaningful benefits for children well into toddlerhood and beyond. Breast milk provides immunological protection, antibodies, and bioactive compounds that support the developing immune system, while its nutritional composition continues to adapt to a growing child’s needs. Longer breastfeeding duration is associated with a lower risk of certain childhood infections, including gastrointestinal and respiratory illnesses, and breastfeeding is also associated with a reduced risk of childhood obesity. Beyond nutrition, nursing provides comfort, co-regulation, and connection during a period when a child’s nervous system is still developing. Extended breastfeeding is not about preventing independence; it is about continuing to meet a child’s nutritional and emotional needs while they gradually grow into greater independence.
