2 days agoYou can’t gatekeep a profession built around how you look. Anyone can model. And there’s always gonna be a taller, skinnier, and healthier 18 year old with your coloring. Modeling is not a career in the way acting or singing is. And the “industry” (which is not even a hundred years old) has constantly changed. Casting directors always want something different. If they want influencers now then fine. Being an influencer probably takes more skills in some ways than being a “career” model.
8 days agoMost agencies are actually opening influencer divisions because on the Numbers side it’s kinda hard to argue against money and brands. Realize that too so models who have measurements year-round and are also decent on the social media side tend to generally just book more versus just straight fit models even things with measurements aren’t based in this looks the best and are more based in finance. The modeling industry cannot exist without a raw understanding of how the money moves and the issue that people have been running into is the realizing that how the money moves depends from brand to brand and what they want long term
9 days agothey did use models, and they also used a handful of influencers. influencers are important in todays landscape. to ignore a whole huge demographic of culture is outdated and out of touch. and the influencers were primarily in the Pink section, which is very aligned w influencer culture. in other words, its fine. hate on influencer culture as you might, but influencers helped make fashion more racially inclusive too. you cant get the good without some bad, thats evolution
9 days agoI understand the frustrations and hope we don’t lose the art of modeling. But I don’t understand why ppl aren’t seeing/talking about the fact that $$ drives every business. They are finding that influencers are bringing in more exposure & $$ than traditional models. Just like we see celebrities in commercials instead of actors, that same approach is being used here because at the end of the day, it’s a business. I am more familiar with the dance world, but you’ll also see this in that industry too. Not saying it’s what’s best! Just surprised no one is talking about this.
9 days agoModels can be influencers so why can't influencers be models. It's a business. It's about money.
9 days agoI think it’s more about sales to them, influencers have followers that are also loyal customers and that can help them make more sales. But as a model myself I totally understand what you are saying!
9 days agoIndustries change. Adapt or accept you’ll lose out. Life is unfortunately not fair and modeling has notoriously not been known to be a “fair” industry. Agencies and clients alike have always wanted to extract as much as possible from models for as little as possible, if they can get more from influencers, they will.
