Today, Zambia celebrates 62 years of independence, and for 27 years of those 62, living in America, I've understood: sometimes it takes seeing the world to truly appreciate the treasures of where you began. Things I once considered ordinary simply because they were Zambian have become some of the things I treasure most. Our people, the richness of our culture, our traditions, our values, and our resilience. Distance has given me perspective, and perspective has deepened my appreciation for the beautiful country that shaped me.

Being Zambian has made me a better American, and being American has made me a better Zambian..... and together, they have made me a better person. I am not divided between two worlds; I am beautifully enriched by both. Today, I celebrate my people, my heritage, and the land that first taught me how to see the world.

62 years of independence, but a heritage thousands of years in the making.
