Behind so much of that magic is our Pastry Chef, Candace Foster, who was just named a 2026 @soulgrown_alabama Soul of the South Award winner in the Food & Beverage category!
From her ever-evolving dessert menu to guest favorites like our Angel Biscuits, Tomato Pie, and Banana Pudding, Candace and her team play an important role in what makes a meal at Helen so memorable.
For nearly five years, we’ve watched her creativity grow, her talents shine, and her dedication to her craft continue to impress us. And somehow, she keeps finding new ways to surprise us.

Meet Cornershop, an indie rock band started in Leicester by British-Punjabi musician Tjinder Singh, his brother Avtar, Ben Ayres and David Chambers. They mixed Punjabi folk influences with guitars, indie rock and experimental beats.
Even the name Cornershop was deliberate. It played on the stereotype that South Asians in Britain only ran corner shops. Tjinder and his bandmates took that label and made it their own.
Their biggest hit, “Brimful of Asha,” came out in 1997. Most people remember its ridiculously catchy chorus, but there’s a beautiful Indian connection behind it.
“Asha” refers to the legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle. It also means “hope” in Hindi. The song celebrates the comfort people find in music, particularly the voices that accompanied Indian families through cinema, radios and vinyl records.
There are also references to Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi and the importance of Hindi film music in British Asian homes.
And that “45” in the chorus? It refers to a 45-rpm vinyl record, the kind families once collected and played at home. 📻
There’s another wonderful detail: Cornershop recorded The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood” in Punjabi for their 1997 album *When I Was Born for the 7th Time*. The Beatles had famously introduced the sitar into that original song, and Cornershop gave it a Punjabi voice decades later.
What began as a space for self-expression in Britain became music that travelled across cultures and generations. And now a new audience is discovering it through Instagram reels.
