16 years ago today, Taylor Swift released ‘Speak Now.’
Taylor Swift wrote all of 'Speak Now' by herself. No co-writers, no safety net, just her and a guitar at 3 a.m. while she was out on tour, figuring out the leap from teenager to grown-up. She wrote as many as 25 songs, picked the best ones, and called every track an open letter to someone she'd meant to say something to in person. Nathan Chapman produced with her, and 'Mine' kicked things off on August 4, 2010.
Then October 25, 2010 hit, and Big Machine Records had already shipped two million copies to stores. 'Speak Now' opened at number one with 1.047 million copies in its first week, only the 16th album in US history to sell a million in seven days, and it earned a Guinness World Record as the fastest-selling US digital album by a woman. It sat at number one for six weeks, and The New York Times said the numbers proved she'd outgrown genre to become a pop megastar.
The awards followed, too. 'Speak Now' was up for Best Country Album at the 2012 Grammys, and 'Mean' walked away with Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance. She took the whole era on the Speak Now World Tour from February 2011 to March 2012, and the album has since gone 6x Platinum in the US.
