The ear drum is a very delicate structure. A hole or perforation can occur in the ear drum due to an injury like hit to the ear, road traffic accident or a blast.
Traumatic perforation should be managed as follows
1) Do not self medicate with ear drops as this disrupts the clot which is essential for spontaneous healing
2) Keep the ear dry
3) See an ENT specialist at the earliest
4) ENT specialist will ask for and audiogram to assess the hearing
5) Also will do an endoscopy of the ear to assess the extent of damage
6) Take your medication and follow all instructions
7) In majority of cases traumatic perforation heals on its own
8) Periodic follow up is essential to track the healing
9) Very rarely surgery may be required to repair the damaged ear drum
