N’Namdi Contemporary is pleased to present Mama Said to Make it Pretty, a solo exhibition by Gregory Coates exploring the tension between aesthetic expectation and the raw physicality of material.
Coates’ practice is characterized by a rigorous exploration of “social abstraction”, a term he embraces to describe art that is both formally compelling and materially grounded in lived experience. Over the course of his career, he has moved from early figuration to a matured abstract language that incorporates found and recycled materials; such as bicycle inner tubes, feathers, cardboard, and industrial detritus; as integral elements of composition and meaning.
