N’Namdi Contemporary is pleased to present Mama Said to Make it Pretty, a solo exhibition by Gregory Coates exploring the tension between aesthetic expectation and the raw physicality of material.

Coates’ practice is characterized by a rigorous exploration of “social abstraction”, a term he embraces to describe art that is both formally compelling and materially grounded in lived experience. Over the course of his career, he has moved from early figuration to a matured abstract language that incorporates found and recycled materials; such as bicycle inner tubes, feathers, cardboard, and industrial detritus; as integral elements of composition and meaning.

“In my update exhibition, Mama Said to Make it Pretty, I explore the tension between surface level aesthetic expectations and the raw, physical reality of the medium. The title references a familiar, domestic directive—an instruction to sanitize, decorate, and smooth over. My work resists this by focusing heavily on the materiality of painting. Instead of hiding the medium to create a clean illusion, I emphasize the weight, texture, and visceral presence of the paint itself. Layers are built up, scraped back, and pushed to their limits, forcing a conversation between the cultural pressure to make something “pretty” and the chaotic, beautiful truth of the physical materials.”
