I have always wanted to live in an apartment building, and now I can cross this off my bucket list. For four months, we rented a space on the 8th floor of a tower block on St-Joseph Boulevard. The place was tiny, the kitchen impractical, the laundry space shared, but the air was fresher and cooler in summer, and the views were spectacular. The higher balconies seem unusable because of the wind, and we had more flies here than in any apartment I’ve lived in before. (Is that a thing? Do flies generally fly high?) Also, it was interesting to listen to the city from up there: the sounds were much louder than you would expect, and you could hear much farther. This was a fun little chapter, but I’m glad it’s over.

I lived in a new build tower in Toronto that had a full kitchen and it was the best housing I’ve ever had. I had a balcony off of my bedroom.

I still need to see an operative balcony in Montréal. The city has a sort of weird relationship with them. It desires them, but as soon as it gets them they stay abandoned. Too much wind? No idea. We used to have them and the wind made their use impossible. Then we moved to another building and I create a.garden and it was beautiful. Insects seems to be attracted to those who try to give balconies a use. Maybe they are secretly allies of a city that say that they want them but then act distant when they get them. Like an awful selfish bad lover.
