The History of Painting by @nelsonhenricks

I spent the week unpacking my books. I rediscovered some things • This signed and dedicated copy of “You Gotta Burn to Shine” by John Giorno from 1996 • A book of poetry by Alison Knowles with this letter tipped into it. She gifted me this after I helped her with a sound mixing problem • I know Avital Ronell is now a ‘problematic’ figure, but I still love the typographical tour de force that is “The Telephone Book” (1989) • While I was in art school, I found Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s “Querelle: The Film Book” (1983) in a rundown second-hand bookstore in the working-class suburb of Forest Lawn in Calgary. It’s a miracle that such a queer book should fall into my hands in such a homophobic context • Though not technically a ‘book’, this collection of Jenny Holzer pencils published by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in 1991 is something that continues to bring me joy • I guess I was supposed to return this copy of “Hamlet” to Forest Lawn High School when I finished reading it, but I liked it so much I kept it. I hate people who mark up books, but my annotations are a puzzling reminder of a previous me • Speaking of high school, I first saw “High School” by Michael Snow in the studio of Don Mabie AKA Chuck Stake, when I was working at Off Centre Centre. It is one of my prized possessions • Iain Baxter was one of my most beloved art school profs, and I am proud to own this document of his N.E. Thing company • When Brenda Wallace left town, she gifted Pierre and me many of her books, among them this copy of Andy Warhol’s “Index Book” from 1967.

Sherbrooke Metro by @nelsonhenricks

I have always wanted to live in an apartment building, and now I can cross this off my bucket list. For four months, we rented a space on the 8th floor of a tower block on St-Joseph Boulevard. The place was tiny, the kitchen impractical, the laundry space shared, but the air was fresher and cooler in summer, and the views were spectacular. The higher balconies seem unusable because of the wind, and we had more flies here than in any apartment I’ve lived in before. (Is that a thing? Do flies generally fly high?) Also, it was interesting to listen to the city from up there: the sounds were much louder than you would expect, and you could hear much farther. This was a fun little chapter, but I’m glad it’s over. by @nelsonhenricks

Secret Metro Tunnel by @nelsonhenricks

Scenes From a Move: After 16 months of itinerancy we finally cleared out our storage space. Thanks to the guys from “Le plan pas con” for doing all the heavy lifting. We were too tired. It was weird not moving in July (Montrealers: you hear me). It was weird encountering our belongings after such a long absence. Some things I was delighted to rediscover, other meh, and other WTF!? First reaction: we have too much stuff! @leplanpascon_demenagement by @nelsonhenricks

The cross on the mountain is gone and has been replaced by a mysterious glowing pit. Should we be worried? by @nelsonhenricks

I’d been to Crémazie métro station before, but never quite noticed how majestic and bonkers it is. 😵‍💫 by @nelsonhenricks

I ❤️ Alma by @nelsonhenricks

Wrapping up a week of image and material experiments at Centre Sagamie. I came here with a hard drive full of stuff and a few loose and not-so-loose ideas. We came up with four small prints on hemp fabric, two larger pieces on cotton rag, and some weird printing on transparent vinyl that will eventually go in the vitrine at La Bande Video in Québec City. I’m a repeat offender at Sagamie, and this residency gets better and better every time. I was supposed to come here back in April, but that got waylaid by illness – mine, Pierre’s, and my brother’s – which eventually put me on a weird and tragic parallel timeline from which I seem to have finally extricated myself. It’s been good for my soul to spend a week making art in a focused way, working in the studio, and putting to bed some research I started back in (gulp!) 2019. Thank you to everyone at Sagamie for taking care of me and getting everything right. @centresagamie by @nelsonhenricks
