Maturity is realizing Damon is the way he is because he was raised by his father, while Stefan is the way he is because, in many ways, he was raised by Damon. The Vampire Diaries spent years showing us the complicated relationship between Damon and Stefan Salvatore, but Season 6, Episode 15, “Let Her Go,” makes their childhood dynamic hit differently. In a flashback to their mother’s funeral, young Stefan is only ten years old. Their father, Giuseppe Salvatore, has told him that they are not supposed to cry. Damon immediately rejects that idea, telling his little brother that he is allowed to cry if he wants to. Then he takes off his own tie, gives it to Stefan, and helps him get ready. It is such a small moment, but it says everything. Damon grew up under a harsh father who taught him to bury vulnerability, while Stefan had an older brother standing between him and some of that cruelty. Damon could be reckless, angry, and deeply self-destructive, but when Stefan was young, he was also the person trying to give him the kindness their father could not. Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley turned the Salvatore brothers into one of The Vampire Diaries’ most iconic relationships because underneath all the fighting, resentment, and supernatural chaos was a bond that started long before either of them became a vampire. Damon learned how to survive his father. Stefan learned how to survive because he had Damon.
