Soft smiles against soaring concrete arches 🌺 The Ruins are one of the Philippines’ architectural wonders, solidly built with high-grade concrete and railroad metal reinforcements. The over-100 year estate was built as an act of love to symbolize sugar baron Don Mariano’s eternal commitment to his late wife, Maria Braga Lacson. During the advent of WWII, Filipino guerrilla forces made the practical yet difficult decision to burn the estate for three days to prevent advancing Japanese forces from procuring the mansion as a military command center. Despite extensive damage from the fire, the strong concrete frame and pillars still stand as a reminder that love, dedication, and beauty still persevere, even through the most challenging circumstances 🤍 Dress from @rentarela Jewelry @jewelmer Photos by @gemorpilla Handler @seingonatice
Welcome back, @cantguardjak!!
Sometimes, the hardest part of being unwell isn’t just what happens to your body. It’s what happens to the world around you. The conversations that fade. The friendships that become distant. The people who don’t know what to say, so they say nothing at all. I wanted to write about this, not to blame anyone, but because I believe we need to talk about it. I am privileged to have the space to process my emotions, reflect on my experience and put some of it into words. But I often think about people facing a life-changing diagnosis in circumstances far harsher than mine. People in oncology and haematology wards who may not even have a proper bed, let alone the comfort, privacy or infection precautions they need. If navigating the emotional weight of this journey is difficult for me, with the privileges and support I have, I cannot help but wonder how much harder it must be for them. I would never wish this journey on anyone. But having to experience it myself has taught me how much it matters to feel seen, remembered and included. Sometimes, it really is the smallest things. A message asking how I am. An unexpected phone call. An invitation for a cup of tea. A conversation about absolutely nothing. Keep making plans. Keep including them. And remember the people caring for them, too. Partners, parents, siblings and caregivers need their people, too. I started sharing my journey because I wanted the world to know that I am more than my diagnosis. Perhaps part of that journey is also using my voice to help others understand what illness can mean beyond the physical symptoms. If sharing my experience helps even one person feel less alone, or helps someone learn how to show up for a friend, then perhaps something meaningful can come from all of this. We are people before we become patients. We are people while we are patients. And we will always be more than our diagnosis. 🫂
I won’t judge you for canceling plans when your brain gets too loud. For using whatever kept you alive. For taking time off, for losing yourself for a while, for being too depressed to shower for weeks. For flinching when someone touches you, for picking the wrong person because you were scared to be alone, for setting boundaries, for your anger taking over when your body already has enough to fight. Imagine how beautiful this world would be if we stopped judging each other so fast and started trying to understand instead. Btw, poetry book ‘Between Heaven & Earth’ is out now. It’s a collection of poems about love, heartbreak, loneliness, inner struggles, healing, and the quiet journey of understanding yourself and life along the way. If you’d like to read it, comment “Book” and I’ll send you the link. [poetry, poet, thefallenpoe.t, victorianpoetry, mentalhealth, nojudgement, youarenotalone, poetrycommunity]
