The harsh truth about Khardung La nobody shows on Instagram:
Imagine spending hours navigating the climb, expecting the amazing views and to experience that feeling of standing at 18000 feet, the feeling that Ladakh has always been known for. But the place we arrived at was a chaotic parking lot of impatient crowds, shouting matches over who gets to touch the sign next, and complete disregard for the fragile space we’re standing in.
Khardung La used to be about survival, respect, and awe. Today, it’s a chaotic queue of people fighting over a yellow milestone for ten seconds of content. There was zero pause. Zero wonder. Just a frantic race to prove "I was here" before jumping back into the car/bikes.
The majesty hasn’t faded, but the soul of the journey is getting lost in the rush!
Ladakh’s vulnerability is being buried under mass tourism. Seeing one of the world’s most formidable passes stripped of its dignity for quick validation is heartbreaking.
I’m not claiming to be special—I was just another tourist in the crowd. Still, when we finally arrived, the teenage dream of conquering Ladakh didn’t quite feel the way I’d always imagined. I could barely even capture the moment, as a couple of elderly gentlemen grew restless the second I spent more than ten seconds near the milestone.
Ladakh's tourism sector hit a record-breaking milestone with 4,05,085 tourist arrivals recorded in the first eight months of 2026, surpassing the total footfall of 3,35,872 visitors for the entire year of 2025 by 20.61%. And it will only increase with such amazing roads infrastructure and other facilities being available throughout Ladakh now.
