Cock and Ball Torture (often shortened to CBT) are a goregrind/pornogrind band from Altenmarkt an der Alz, Germany, formed in 1997 by three former members of Carnal Tomb. They became one of the best-known names associated with the pornogrind side of goregrind, built around slow-to-mid-paced grooves, tupa tupa drums, pitch-shifted + pig snort vocals and deliberately grotesque humour.
Their early catalogue is packed with now-classic underground splits, including releases with Squash Bowels, Libido Airbag, Grossmember, Disgorge Mex, Last Days of Humanity, and a four-way split with Filth, Downthroat and Negligent Collateral Collapse. Their main albums were Opus(sy) VI (2000), Sadochismo (2002) and Egoleech (2004), with Egoleech notably moving further towards brutal death metal and dropping some of the earlier pitch-shifted vocal approach.
What makes CBT worth including on the Noise Archives is that while they’re far from an obscure band within goregrind, they’re also a really important part of understanding how the genre developed. Alongside Gut, they helped establish the groove-heavy, pornographic strain of goregrind that would become known as pornogrind, while their later material demonstrates how that sound could move towards brutal death metal.
The original trio of Timo Pahlke, Sascha Pahlke and Tobias Augustin are still listed as the band’s current members, making CBT an unusually long-running project considering their roots in the late-’90s underground. They even took their filthy German goregrind overseas, including an appearance at Ohio Deathfest.
