The Lipstick reigns! Yesterday over 300 Yale students, staff, faculty, and alumni gathered on Beinecke Plaza and rebuilt an iconic symbol of student protest — the Claes Oldenburg sculpture “Lipstick Ascending on Caterpillar Tracks.” In 1969, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) protested against the Vietnam War and for co-education and labor causes. We honor their legacy as we protest Yale’s negotiations with the Trump administration and restrictive policies put in place after the anti-war Palestine solidarity encampments in 2024. Yale must defend diversity and exit negotiations; reform trustee governance; repeal restrictive free expression policies; and codify academic freedom. Together we can Democratize Yale!
