I’ve seen countless viral videos claiming that rotisserie chicken is the most dangerous food on the planet. So I decided to search information about some of the biggest concerns 1. The plastic
Polypropylene (#5) is the same plastic as yogurt cups and microwaveable containers. It’s heat-stable (melts around 320°F), BPA-free, and FDA-cleared for food contact. 2. The chlorine rinse
This happens to the raw bird at the plant, and then it’s fully cooked. It’s not household bleach. The USDA caps chlorine-based antimicrobials at 50 ppm, and chillers often run around 3-5 ppm (US tap water can contain up to 4 ppm). The point is to cut Salmonella and Campylobacter. The EU prefers hygiene controls throughout production instead, which is a policy choice, not evidence of harm. 3. Sodium phosphate
A super common additive in cheese, deli meat, baked goods, and canned soup. It keeps meat juicy. The FDA classifies it as “Generally Recognized as Safe.” One note: people with chronic kidney disease are often told to limit added phosphates. 4. Carrageenan
A seaweed-derived thickener also found in ice cream, yogurt, and plant milks. Food-grade carrageenan is approved by the FDA and EFSA. It’s not the same as poligeenan, a degraded form that isn’t allowed in food. Gut-inflammation concerns come mostly from cell and animal studies, and human evidence is limited. Some people with sensitive digestion report bloating. 5. They spend all day under heat lamps Costco maintains strict 2hr max for all chickens, but most are picked up by customers before that.
