ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT. CAREER DESTROYED. NOW AN APOLOGY, NEARLY 11 YEARS LATER. Former UBC professor and bestselling author Steven Galloway is back in the headlines after Chelsea Rooney publicly apologized for spreading serious, unproven sexual assault allegations against him. The controversy began in 2015. Galloway was subsequently fired from UBC, despite never being criminally charged. A university-commissioned investigation found the sexual assault allegations unsubstantiated. Rooney now acknowledges that she should not have circulated allegations she did not know were true and regrets the harm caused to Galloway, his career and his family. Meanwhile, the original complainant, identified as A.B., has reportedly decided not to testify at the upcoming defamation trial. Galloway’s defamation case is scheduled to begin October 5 in B.C. Supreme Court. Sexual assault allegations must always be taken seriously, but so must the presumption of innocence. When someone’s reputation and career are destroyed by unproven allegations, can an apology ever repair the damage? #StevenGalloway #UBC #Defamation #CanadianNews #soniawest
