Is not a call for physical martyrdom or compliance with religious laws. Instead, it is an entry point into the central mystery of spiritual transmutation. The dissolution of the false, egoic self to liberate the divine spark within. We must decode the two different definitions of "life" being contrasted. In the original Greek, the word often translated as “life” is “psyche” (soul, mind, or ego-personality), while the ultimate life it refers to is “zoe” (the divine, eternal principle of life essence).
The material world (Kenoma, the void) is considered a lower, illusory realm. The human personality, ego, and bodily conditioning belong entirely to this lower realm. To "save" your life (psyche) means to protect, feed, and cling to the illusion of the separate ego. It is the desire to preserve worldly status, comfort, and physical identity. • By fiercely protecting and identifying with this temporary, artificial self, you remain asleep. You anchor your consciousness to the fleeting material world, effectively "losing" your true connection to the eternal, divine source. "losing" one's life is the ultimate requirement for Gnosis (experiential spiritual knowledge).
To "lose" your life means to undergo intentional psychological dissolution—what Western esotericism calls the Alchemical Mortification or Ego Death. It is the systematic detachment from personal history, social conditioning, desires, and the false narrative of who you are. When the dense armor of the ego is shattered and "lost," the divine spark (Pneuma) trapped inside is finally liberated. By destroying the illusion of individuality, you discover your identity with the All. You awaken to Zoe—the uncreated, indestructible life of the divine realm (Pleroma).
