A #Florida convenience store owner is behind bars after allegedly chasing down and intentionally running over a 14-year-old boy he suspected of burglarizing his business.

According to West Melbourne Police, 32-year-old Kavan Vishnubhai Patel is facing a second-degree m*rder charge in connection with the de@th of Hunter Russey, who was found unresponsive in a ditch last Tuesday. Authorities say Patel reported a possible break-in at his store around 4:30 a.m. after receiving an alarm notification and noticing broken glass on the front door through surveillance footage. However, before officers arrived, Patel allegedly pursued Hunter, who was riding an e-bike, and struck him with his vehicle while traveling approximately 30 mph. “He continues to follow him, doesn’t call law enforcement, doesn’t notify law enforcement that this is going on and, at some point, runs into the bicyclist trying to stop him,” police spokesperson Lt. Graig Erenstoft said.

Making matters worse, investigators allege Patel left the critically injured teen on the roadside without offering assistance or informing responding officers about the collision. Hunter wasn’t discovered until roughly an hour later and remained on life support until his family made the heartbreaking decision to remove it Saturday night (Oct. 17). According to an arrest affidavit, Patel admitted to intentionally hitting the teen, reportedly telling investigators he was angry about the suspected burglary and knew he should have contacted police instead. Authorities have not determined whether Hunter was actually involved in the attempted break-in. His family has since decided to donate his organs. “We will continue working on this case and provide prosecutors with the evidence they need to prosecute Patel,” police said in a statement. Patel remains in custody without bond.
