Heti is married and raising her daughters in the US. A year after after mother's death, she receives shocking photos of her mother as a young woman which force her to question whether she really knew her at all.
The story deals with the impact on women during the Islamic Revolution in Iran. It's a reminder that not everyone has the freedom of choice that many of us are privileged to have available to us. Laleh explores how the past we inherit shapes us, told in the context of a woman navigating her grief. l love the way Laleh sensitively explores the complex layers of female identity, dreams and desires - as daughters, parents and mothers. There's a richness to this story about the deeply hidden lives of the women that surround us.
This is an incredibly powerful book - beautifully written, full of humour, intelligence and incredibly moving . I definitely recommend it!
