The orange glow stretching across those hills really caught my eye, especially with the open grassland in the foreground. I've always enjoyed hiking in places where you can get away from the crowds. Do you usually explore the Tetons on hiking trails, or prefer finding quiet spots for photography?

Lesson 6 💌: You don’t have to change who you are or how you look to be taken seriously.

Looking back, I don’t think it was the complaint itself that affected me most. It was what I took away from it.

That perhaps if I dressed a little differently, wore less makeup, made less effort with my appearance, blended in a little more… people might take me more seriously.

And I think we have all been there…

Changed something about ourselves, not because we wanted to, but because we worried about how we might be perceived.

Of course, there are professional standards, dress codes and safety considerations. I’ve spent my career in medicine, and I understand their importance.

But there’s a difference between dressing appropriately for your job and feeling you have to dull your personality to be respected in it.

At the time, I was a young medical student. I didn’t question it. I just put on scrubs and got on with my day.

And perhaps that’s the bit I’d do differently now. Not necessarily the clothes, but the assumption that someone else’s judgement of my appearance must mean there was something wrong with it.

As I raise my daughters, I want them to understand that feedback is important, but not every opinion requires them to change.

You can be feminine, enjoy fashion, love makeup, wear pink shoes AND be intelligent, capable and professional.

One doesn’t cancel out the other.

And I wish my younger self had understood that a little sooner.
