Creatives are performers. We’re storytellers, showmen, provocateurs, and instigators. We want the curtain to pull back. We want the electric shock of having our work witnessed, felt, and remembered. There is nothing dirty about wanting an audience for something you poured your blood into. The tragedy of the modern internet isn’t that artists are performing. It’s that tech platforms completely eliminated the backstage. They collapsed the green room, the darkroom, the rehearsal hall, and the stage into one single, unblinking 24/7 panopticon. You aren’t just invited to give a performance, you’re ALSO forced to broadcast your unfinished breakfast, your “process”, and your doubts just to stay relevant. BUT YOU CAN’T create anything really fucking good under constant surveillance. Great work requires a closed door. It requires a rehearsal room where you can miss your cues, try the weirdest angle, and have other artists look at your raw drafts with actual care, away from the applause and the boos of a public feed. And don’t even get us started on the word “community”. Silicon Valley turned it into a hollow marketing gimmick to sell loneliness back to us. Cramming millions of strangers into an open feed to yell their elevator pitches into the void isn’t community. Real community is a workshop. It’s the unscalable, deliberate friction of showing up when there’s no algorithm handing out gold stars for it. Building an environment capable of holding that has required us to make decisions that look completely unhinged. From the outside, people look at these decisions and think you’re losing your mind. On the inside… (to be fair there was plenty of midnight ceiling-staring and texts back and forth like “are we crazy?” “yes we’re fucking crazy”). But we made every scary, financially irrational call because we are stubbornly, radically committed to the vision. We want to cultivate deep, dangerous creative work and we want a space that allows us to do that. You can’t do that on an infrastructure built for shallow extraction. You just can’t. The brand new Creative Living website is live. Comment WWW below and we’ll show you what we’ve been building.
MTV’s first Indian VJ. A global presence before there was a roadmap. To date, the name every best-dressed list still starts with. Rahul Khanna, for Manifesta. Become More.
