American universities have spent centuries accumulating donations from wealthy alumni, industrialists, and philanthropists, then investing that money to generate even more wealth.

During the Gilded Age, fortunes made in steel, oil, and railroads helped transform American higher education. After WW2, massive federal research funding helped turn universities into global centers of science and technology.

Beginning in the 1980s, elite universities also became sophisticated investors, putting their endowments into stocks, private equity, venture capital, and real estate.

By 2025, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and Princeton collectively held approximately $177 billion in endowments. These institutions typically spend around 4–5% annually, allowing much of the remaining money to continue growing.
