My influences
I was all about Star Wars and Luke Skywalker until I read The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Like millions of others, I wanted to go live in the Shire and fight the good fight.
The Silmarillion turned my world upside down. I was worldbuilding and laying down the roots that would eventually become the world of the Shores of the Deluge, Erone.
The Black Company by Glen Cook opened my mind up to the darkness. I wanted to create a world that had stakes and consequences for my characters. No one would waltz to the end of my stories; they would be crawling across the finish line if they made it at all.
Use of Weapons by Iain M. Banks introduced me to non-linear storytelling along with a widespread narrative. I wanted to create big, expansive stories that crossed multiple generations with threads holding them all together.
Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman was a book/series that I did not realize how much it inspired me until recently. I have played Dungeons and Dragons since the 80s, and this series snuck its way into my influences.
What are some of your influences? Let me know in the comments.
