A new study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has found that older adults who nap frequently may face a significantly higher risk of developing dementia. By tracking nearly 1,000 Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older over a 10-year period, the study revealed that individuals who napped on most days or every day had a 48% higher risk of a dementia diagnosis compared to those who rarely or never napped. This increased risk remained present even after accounting for factors like age, existing health conditions, and overall nighttime sleep duration. The researchers also noted that unintentional napping—such as nodding off unexpectedly—was tied to a 39% higher risk, while short naps lasting 30 minutes or less were associated with a 40% higher risk. Crucially, the authors emphasize that these findings do not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship, meaning that taking a nap does not inherently cause brain damage or cognitive decline. Instead, frequent or worsening daytime sleepiness is considered an early warning sign or biomarker. The underlying neurodegenerative changes associated with early-stage dementia can damage the brain regions responsible for regulating wakefulness, leading to increased fatigue and daytime dozing long before memory loss or other clinical symptoms officially manifest. Every month has a feeling of its own. September arrives in a quiet haze, with golden leaves gathering along the paths and cool mornings that make you linger a little longer. October brings rain against the windows, wet streets reflecting headlights, and the familiar comfort of coming home before dark. By November, the branches are bare, the skies turn grey, and the first dusting of snow settles over sleepy neighbourhoods. December feels like evening walks beneath glowing street lamps, fresh snow under your shoes, and warm windows in the distance. January holds the stillness of long nights and roads tucked beneath a blanket of white. February brings misty drives, damp woodland, and those afternoons when winter seems reluctant to leave. Then March lets a little warmth back in. April fills the branches with blossoms and stretches the sunlight across the water. By May, wildflowers are catching the evening light, the trees are green again, and a walk you meant to keep short lasts until sunset. There’s something beautiful about noticing these small changes while they’re happening. Which month feels most like you? #TheTrillionaireLife
