I’ve done it. I’ve finally found true enemies who are attracted to one another and angry about it in a book. Not “he’s annoyingly handsome” and then they fall in love. But internal conflict at the thought of kissing them, hatred that runs so deep they’d have to break free of their own moral compasses to admit to any kind of attraction. Definitely more likely to kill one another than make out.
Add to that a burn so slow. So, so slow. The TENSION? 🔥
All of this against a backdrop of war. An intense, violent, complex war that takes place in a fantastical dystopia bordering on sci-fi.
Soraya is a fantastic FMC. She’s genuinely intimidating - which is perfect because she must face Ikarus. Both have been raised as weapons, on the opposite sides of an ongoing war.
I love when war is written like this. Not sensationalised or glorified, and instead the horror and violence of it is shown. The way it has changed the characters really matters, even beyond the main characters.
This was incredibly enjoyable, and I read it so quickly. I can’t remember the last time I was so excited like this at the beginning of a fantasy series. I’m ready for the next book!
