In 2007, J.K. Rowling took a Kolkata Durga Puja committee to court over a 96-foot Hogwarts castle.
It happened in Salt Lake’s FD Block, where a neighbourhood Durga Puja committee decided to recreate the world of Harry Potter for their annual celebrations.
The pandal featured a towering Hogwarts-inspired castle, magical decorations, character installations and even a replica of the Hogwarts Express. At its centre stood Maa Durga.
But days before Pujo, the organisers received a legal notice.
J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros. had objected to the unauthorised use of Harry Potter’s copyrighted characters and imagery. The lawsuit sought ₹20 lakh in damages and restrictions on the display.
Interestingly, this wasn’t the committee’s first unusual theme. In previous years, it had recreated Swami Vivekananda’s residence and even the Titanic!
The organisers maintained that their Durga Puja was a community celebration, not a commercial venture.
On 12 October 2007, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul of the Delhi High Court allowed the festival to proceed.
The court refused to stop the pandal or award the requested compensation. However, the organisers had to undertake not to use Harry Potter characters without permission in the future. The immediate permission extended only until 26 October.
And so, Hogwarts remained standing in Kolkata.
Bengal’s tradition of themed pandals turns temporary structures into extraordinary works of public art. Every year, artisans spend months working with bamboo, cloth, clay, papier-mâché and lighting to create installations that exist for only a few days.
The craftsmanship is so extraordinary that in 2021, UNESCO inscribed Durga Puja in Kolkata on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
