Extreme heat is becoming a fact of life in more parts of the world, with serious implications for pregnant women and their babies. Hundreds of studies have linked high heat exposure to adverse birth outcomes, but scientists are still trying to figure out just how hot is too hot. A recent study in Sydney is putting that question to the test, using a climate chamber that can reach 104°F (40°C) to determine when pregnant women can no longer safely regulate their core temperature. Finding that limit matters as heat exposure increases, particularly in places like Palau, where women and their babies face an average of 77 heat-risk days a year—and staying cool can come at a cost many families can’t afford.
