📖 Meditations: Book IV, Chapter III (Part 4) Yesterday, we touched upon a small fragment of Book IV, Chapter III. This chapter is, undoubtedly, one of the most central and celebrated passages in all of Stoic literature. Rather than offering separate, isolated fixes for every distinct problem in life, Marcus Aurelius reduces human suffering to one fundamental principle: it is not external events that disturb us, but our judgments about those events. By shifting our internal frame, this single chapter equips us to process almost any common struggle: 🍂 Stressed or burnt out? You don't necessarily need a distant vacation or a change of scenery; you only need to practice withdrawing into your own mind to find true retreat and recharge. 🍂 Angry at someone's actions? Remember that rational beings are meant for cooperation. People often err through ignorance, and in the vast expanse of time, we will all soon return to dust anyway. 🍂 Anxious about the future or your reputation? Look at the infinite scale of time and space. Our modern anxieties quickly shrink when framed against eternity. 🍂 Overwhelmed by sudden misfortune? Realize that the event itself remains completely outside your soul. It is only your inner opinion that labels it as "bad." This chapter acts as a universal mental toolbox—a concise set of fundamental precepts we can recall in moments of distress to instantly restore our composure and clarity. May we all learn to use these tools well. Have a peaceful night. 🌙 #meditations #MarcusAurelius #philosophystudent #hikari_012100
