In a blast of showmanship, Elon Musk has unveiled Tesla’s redesigned Roadster 2, nine years after the luxury sports car was first announced. This version, however, features thrusters that can send it airborne. The two-seater car was revealed at a demonstration event at the rocket development and testing facility of SpaceX—which collaborated on the development of the new Roadster—in McGregor, Texas, on Thursday night. Crucially, there was no human occupant during the demo, which Tesla and SpaceX CEO Musk said was “to make sure we don’t kill anyone.” Those assembled to watch in person cheered as the prototype drove upside down on a ramp using a suction system and landed using in-built thrusters. “I’m not sure it’s necessarily legal in all jurisdictions," Musk said of the car’s “flying” technology. “This is not necessarily a safety-optimized car.” The Federal Aviation Administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Roadster 2 was first announced back in 2017, with Tesla taking deposits in 2018 and saying deliveries would begin in 2020. Last night, Tesla said production would finally begin in 2028.
