A group of demonstrators described as supporters of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers reportedly marched through downtown Detroit on Saturday, chanting “Death to Islam” near Cass Technical High School. The group was led by Jake Lang, an anti-Islam agitator who has organized several demonstrations targeting Muslim communities, including previous protests in Dearborn. The demonstration comes just ahead of a major campaign rally at Cass Tech High School, where former President Barack Obama is scheduled to join Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson on Saturday evening. El-Sayed, who is Muslim, is running against Rogers in Michigan’s closely watched U.S. Senate race. It is unclear whether the demonstrators were officially affiliated with the Rogers campaign.
I go into this topic in my new essay called “The Feminist Urge to Blame Men for Women’s (Hypothetical) Choices: Sexual Coercion, Victim Identity, and Voice Note Guy.” You can read it via Substack or by downloading the PDF from my Big Cartel shop (both linked in bio). Both versions are $5. Email me if you are unable to afford the $5 price, and I’ll send it to you (junowayward@gmail.com) The essay is about the dangerous misinterpretations of feminist consent theory and sexual coercion that so many people hold, and the way those people interpret harmless (albeit uncomfortable or painful) interactions as sexual violence. I write about how a lot of the discourse about “voice note guy” was an instance of a larger trend among some feminists of pre-emptively putting women in the victim role whenever they’re imagined to feel even the slightest degree of sexual pressure from men. This view infantilizes women by assuming they lack the agency to navigate social pressure, willfully make choices, and take responsibility for those choices. I recognize it as an attempt to counter# the dominant social messaging of rape culture which asserts that women are always to blame for any harassment, abuse, or violence they experience from men, but we should be careful not to over-correct by fostering the cultural conditions for false reports of sexual violence, viewing men as psychologically more powerful than women, and viewing women as perpetual victims who are always disempowered when relating with men. I argue that, as women, we need to be able to distinguish dynamics in which we’re victims of men from those in which we aren’t, for the purpose of utilizing our agency where we have it and learning to become more relationally empowered. #sexualcoercion #feministmovement #womensempowerment #victimidentity

BLEH even when I’m married, I don’t wanna be talking about marriage life. Between the Pakistani dramas I’ve been watching, being in Pakistan now, and marriage questions… I’m bored. If you’re jealous of my freedom, just say so. Can we, whether married or not, talk about other achievements as well?? I’ve gotten my response down now so if you don’t wanna get more jealous, I’d hold off haha #marriage #pakistani #relatable #southasian #dating
🇰🇷🐦‍⬛ Kim Jinsan – Crow Kim Jinsan – acoustic guitar 🎸 Superband 2 – JTBC, episode 2 • When Crow began, the producer Lee Sang-soon, a judge on Superband 2, a show on the Korean TV channel JTBC, was left open-mouthed, per the news site Starnews. Kim Jinsan was the second contestant to appear in the episode aired on July 5, 2021. At the end, Lee Sang-soon said the young man's technique left nothing to criticize and that the young man played much better than the judge himself. For Lee Sang-soon, even with so much technique the melody could be followed, and the piece had a theme and communicated. Another judge, Yoo Hee-yeol, exclaimed that such a young man really existed. And the judge Yoon Sang remarked that the guitarist was younger than the judge's own son. • Listen again and notice the sound from half a minute on, when the camera swaps the close-up of the hands for the stage seen from afar: the sound thickens, the lows and mids gain body, and they stay that way to the end of the clip, never going back. • In 2017, still a boy, Kim Jinsan appeared on a program of the TV network SBS that looks for young talents, and the network said he began playing in an after-school class and soon was winning contests with his own pieces. The same program showed him playing on the street, in the cold, without drawing many people's attention, perhaps because of the style, strange to passersby. In this performance, he plays seated and hunched over the guitar, and at the end of the clip the camera rises from the hands to his face, head down, still playing. On Superband 2, where musicians who played alone look for partners to form bands, his group reached the final. And the clip of this performance, on JTBC's channel, has more than 22 million views. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music daily on your feed. • #kimjinsan #superband2 #acousticguitar #classicalmusic
