Following the alleged sexual harassment of a female journalist by Delhi Police, journalists, students and other demonstrators took to the streets demanding justice and the registration of an FIR. However, several people who participated in the protest have themselves been named in FIRs. Among them are students, one of whom has now recounted the horrifying treatment he allegedly faced at the hands of Delhi Police. The student described how he was allegedly subjected to physical assault, brutality and intimidation by the police. His account raises serious questions about the treatment of young people who come forward to demand accountability and justice. If students demanding justice are allegedly treated like criminals, what direction is our democracy heading in? The right to protest peacefully and demand accountability is fundamental to a functioning democracy. Allegations of police brutality and intimidation must be taken seriously, investigated fairly and addressed transparently. Demanding justice for a woman who has allegedly faced sexual harassment should not lead to further questions about the treatment of those raising their voices. Who will hold the authorities accountable when those demanding accountability themselves allege abuse at the hands of the police?
