Norman McLaren made a film in 1940 with no camera and no microphone.
He drew the images directly onto film with pen and ink. He drew the soundtrack the same way β marks on the optical track that, when run through a projector, produced clicks, pops, and buzzing tones.
No lens. No recording equipment. Just a hand, a film strip, and the understanding that cinema is, at its core, just light passing through marks on a surface.
