29 YEARS AGO TODAY — GANG RELATED. 🎬🖤
RELEASED OCTOBER 8, 1997.
On October 8, 1997, Gang Related was released in theaters — one day after its soundtrack and just over a year after Tupac passed away.
Written and directed by Jim Kouf, the film stars Tupac Shakur as Detective Rodriguez alongside James Belushi as Detective Divinci, with a cast that also includes Lela Rochon, Dennis Quaid, James Earl Jones and Gary Cole.
The story follows Rodriguez and Divinci, two corrupt detectives whose scheme begins to collapse after the man they kill during a staged drug deal turns out to be an undercover DEA agent. What follows is an increasingly desperate attempt to cover their tracks and escape the consequences of what they have done.
Gang Related would ultimately become Tupac’s final screen performance.
And Rodriguez shows a very different side of him as an actor.
There is a nervousness and vulnerability in the character that sits underneath everything he does. Rodriguez is caught between his loyalty to Divinci, his fear of what is closing in around them and the realization that the situation is moving further and further beyond their control.
His connection with James Belushi makes that dynamic even more interesting.
Belushi later recalled that their working relationship did not begin smoothly, but that the two became extremely close during the production. He described the bond they developed off camera as something that ultimately carried into what they created together on screen.
By the time Gang Related reached audiences, Pac had already shown how much range he had as an actor — from Bishop in Juice, to Lucky in Poetic Justice, Birdie in Above the Rim, Spoon in Gridlock’d and finally Rodriguez here.
Five characters that feel completely different from one another.
And that is what makes watching Gang Related 29 years later especially bittersweet.
Rodriguez became the final new character audiences would ever get to see Tupac bring to the screen — while his performances had made it increasingly clear that there was still so much more he could have done as an actor. 🖤🎬
