A moment in Paris put Bally Bagayoko in the international spotlight 🇫🇷🇲🇱

On October 6, the mayor of Saint-Denis stood between riot police and students protesting teacher shortages and poor school conditions. He was later helped after exposure to tear gas.

Born in France to a family of Malian origin, Bagayoko (@ballybagayoko) grew up in Saint-Denis. A former basketball player and coach, he became the city’s mayor in March 2026.

Behind the viral images is a wider student movement demanding more teachers, better classrooms and more resources for public education.

What do you think of his reaction?
