In our culture, we don't like to talk about wills. Mention one at the dinner table and someone will quickly say, "God forbid! Is it well?" 😄 We treat planning for the unexpected as though it invites the unexpected.
But as a lawyer, I have seen what happens when there is no plan: families who once ate from the same pot dragging each other to court, widows and children struggling to access what was rightfully theirs, and loved ones searching for documents no one knew existed. Very often, the pain of loss is made worse by the confusion that follows.
Putting your house in order is not a sign of fear or a lack of faith. It is an act of love and responsibility. A few simple steps can make a world of difference:
• Write a will, and review it as your life changes.
• Update your next of kin and beneficiaries with your bank, employer and pension fund.
• Keep important documents together, and make sure someone you trust knows where they are.
• Have honest conversations with your spouse and family about your affairs.
None of this takes away a single day from your life. It simply ensures that the people you love are protected, whatever tomorrow brings.
Don't leave your loved ones with questions you could have answered today.
