In surfacing, ‘24-25 Stanford Denning Visiting Artist Patty Chang explores the histories of a 19th-century Chinese fishing village at Point Alones, now home to Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Station.
Through art, archaeology, marine science, and community collaboration, Chang brings these shards of the past into the present. The exhibition features diverse forms, archival materials, and new works, including porcelain massage tables used to dry squid during a collective workshop at Stanford’s O’Donohue Family Stanford Educational Farm.
In this video profile, the artist and co-curator Kelsey Chen share the research, discoveries, and relationships at its center, and how working across disciplines helped shape the project.
