An evening to celebrate the people who make the arts happen at Stanford. ✨ The Office of the Vice President for the Arts brought our arts community together for the annual Arts Convening reception and dinner. Gathered onstage at @frostamphitheater as this incredible venue nears the end of its season, artists, faculty, student leaders, and staff shared an evening to celebrate our collective creativity across campus. Vice President for the Arts Deborah Cullinan (@dmcullinan) reflected on how traditions, both big and small, sustain creativity and how the arts spark curiosity, invite us in, and stir new possibilities. What becomes possible when we trust artists, give them a seat at the table, and bring this dimension into the systems and structures of our changing world. That spirit came to life through a participatory movement exercise led by Marcus Young, U.S. Cultural Policy Fellow for Stanford Arts. With Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 as our soundtrack, Marcus introduced us to the basics of conducting and got all of us to move and reach out. 🎶 It was a beautiful night and we’re grateful for this community and all that we’re imagining and building together. ✨ 📸: Harrison Truong #stanfordarts #artshapesus #Stanford #ArtsCommunity by @stanfordarts
Small spores carry new beginnings. A few moments from Spreading the Spores event last week, when our first chef in residence Ramón Perisé, R&D Director at @mugaritz, passed the spores to @mcmasterchef of @silolondon, opening the next chapter of our Chef-in-Residence program. Douglas and the Silo team will join us from March to April, bringing new questions, perspectives, and possibilities to our lab kitchen. We look forward to sharing what grows from this exchange: a space where art, gastronomy, and science find a common language—and where ideas take shape through the food we create together. @stanfordarts @bioe_stanford @stanford.doerr @stanford.rde by @stanfordarts
Art for all 🎨 This past weekend, local families enjoyed making, live music, story time, and a scavenger hunt at @cantorarts and @anderson.collection.stanford. by @stanfordarts
What happens when you make art with a robot? 🤖 Artist Jussi Ängeslevä (@jangesle) spent five weeks exploring this research topic as the @stanfordroboticscenter first artist in residence, experimenting with a robot arm, a light tube, and human movement. His project, Geometry Yields, invites you to interact with the robot. You guide it, but it also sets limits on where you can go. That conversation became the heart of the work. In surfacing, ‘24-25 Stanford Denning Visiting Artist Patty Chang explores the histories of a 19th-century Chinese fishing village at Point Alones, now home to Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Station. Through art, archaeology, marine science, and community collaboration, Chang brings these shards of the past into the present. The exhibition features diverse forms, archival materials, and new works, including porcelain massage tables used to dry squid during a collective workshop at Stanford’s O’Donohue Family Stanford Educational Farm. In this video profile, the artist and co-curator Kelsey Chen share the research, discoveries, and relationships at its center, and how working across disciplines helped shape the project. Meet Mark Shunney, Stanford's self-styled “art ranger.” 🎨🌲 As the university's public art program manager, Shunney oversees the care and maintenance of more than 80 works of art on the Stanford campus and leads tours from a tiny eco trailer next to Meyer Green. On the job, he wears a uniform of his own design that is both practical and symbolic. “‘Ranger’ is code for safety and care and conservation, and there’s a lot of overlap with the responsibility I task myself with in caring for these artworks and the experience of the public,” he said.
