Starbucks has reportedly explored acquiring Chipotle in what could become the largest acquisition in restaurant industry history, according to the Financial Times.

The coffee giant has worked with advisers in recent months on a potential takeover proposal for Chipotle, which had a market value of nearly $39 billion when the report emerged. However, it remains unclear whether Starbucks has submitted a formal offer, and no agreement has been announced.

The potential acquisition would reunite Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol with Chipotle, where he served as chief executive from 2018 to 2024. During his tenure, Niccol helped lead the chain through a major turnaround and a period of expansion.

If completed, the acquisition would surpass Burger King’s $11.4 billion purchase of Tim Hortons in 2014, setting a new record for the restaurant industry.

Following the report, Chipotle shares rose while Starbucks shares declined, reflecting differing investor reactions to the potential deal. Thoughts?
