In Arlington, Virginia, designer Yuri Sagatov of ODE Design translates urban spatial freedom into a thoughtfully structured modern family sanctuary.

Featured - AHJ EDITION 7.0 | 2026,
Materiality plays a central role in unifying the architecture. A restrained palette of natural oak, honed limestone, and classic marble grounds the interiors, complemented by flexible communal layouts and expansive black-framed glazing that connects directly to a 13-foot-ceiling screened porch. Upper levels transition into serene, sculptural retreats, highlighted by a dramatic floating staircase, vaulted private suites, and a primary bath centered around a striking black soaking tub set beneath a overhead skylight.

Upstairs, the program thoughtfully balances family life and personal sanctuary. A dedicated children’s wing featuring a light-filled lofted play area can be closed off when needed, while the serene primary suite offers vaulted ceilings and a dramatic ensuite anchored by a sculptural black soaking tub set directly beneath a skylight. Materially, a grounded palette of natural oak, limestone, and marble unifies the residence, leading down to a moodier, lounge-like basement “club” finished in dark materials for an immersive, private retreat.
