🇩🇪 Surely the strangest sound in F1 history… the blown diffuser caused a distinct, aggressive, machine-gun-like exhaust overrun “blowing” sound during heavy braking and corner entry.
💡 Engines were mapped to pump air through the cylinders and out of the exhaust even when drivers lifted off the throttle, energising the rear diffuser to maintain downforce in high-speed corners.
🧪 Blown diffusers were introduced by Adrian Newey and
@redbullracing at the end of testing in 2010, with the other teams copying the technology on their cars during the following season in 2011, when I filmed this footage.
❌ The FIA tightened the rules on exhaust positioning in 2012-2013, but teams found clever ways to still keep some of the desired effect.
🏎️ It wasn’t until 2014 and the drastic single exhaust 1.6L turbo engine/chassis formula change that blown diffusers disappeared from F1.
✅ Fun fact: Sky F1’s
@karunchandhok replaced Jarno Trulli at Team Lotus as part of a one-off agreement for this event, which would turn out to be his final race in F1. He remained reserve driver at the team until the Japanese GP 3 months later before departing the sport as a driver.
