Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe and Lauren Bacall in How to Marry a Millionaire (1953). 💎✨
Three Hollywood icons, one luxurious Manhattan apartment and one very ambitious plan: find themselves millionaire husbands.
Released in 1953, How to Marry a Millionaire brought together Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe and Lauren Bacall as Loco Dempsey, Pola Debevoise and Schatze Page, three models determined to use their expensive New York surroundings to meet wealthy eligible bachelors.
Naturally, romance refuses to cooperate with their carefully calculated strategy. 💋
Each actress brings something completely different to the trio.
Bacall’s Schatze is sophisticated, cynical and determined to avoid another financially disastrous marriage.
Grable’s Loco is cheerful and impulsive, while Monroe’s Pola is adorably near-sighted but refuses to wear her glasses around men because she believes they make her look less attractive.
Their chemistry is what makes the film so irresistible.
Beneath all the diamonds, gowns and millionaire hunting, the story ultimately becomes a celebration of friendship, romantic chaos and discovering that love doesn’t always arrive with the bank balance you expected. 🥂
The film was also a technical milestone for Hollywood.
It became the first film photographed in CinemaScope to be released by 20th Century-Fox, helping introduce audiences to the spectacular widescreen format that studios hoped would lure people away from their increasingly popular television sets.
And then there’s the fashion.
Designed by Travilla, the wardrobe gives all three stars an endless parade of glamorous 1950s looks, making the movie as much a feast for fashion lovers as classic-film fans.
Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe and Lauren Bacall together in one movie. Hollywood really was showing off. 🎬🖤
